Barely Brunch

One Sunday we sat in church listening to a guest pastor preach the Word. It was no ordinary Sunday in our church because there was an inordinate amount of guests. Our church denomination was having their annual meeting in our town the next day so our pews were full of visitors from various places.

My husband Jonathan, the social butterfly he is, decided to invite the pastor and some folks over for brunch. He casually mentioned that he might do this a few nights prior, but we made no formal plan and I did no prep.

By the end of church, Jonathan had invited a handful of folks, including the guest pastor, to our house. We have three girls, so the girls and I took off to figure out what to feed some twenty people without notice or preparation. We stopped at the local produce stand (normally I don’t shop on the Sabbath but I made an exception) and picked up eggs, fruit, and a pie. We raced home to beat the guests.

When we got home my girls jumped into action. My two oldest (fifteen and thirteen) started making a massive batch of pancakes and waffles. All those hours in the kitchen letting them bake and cook paid off. They were awesome. Somehow, with the Lord’s blessing, we pulled off a nice brunch.

This reminds me of our faith journey. Being part of God’s family means stepping into opportunities that maybe you weren’t expecting, or looking for. You never know how the Lord will use your willingness to say yes.

One of the guests was a young dad who had his daughters with him. His wife was joining up with him the next day. We provided a place for his older daughter to run around, rather than in a hotel room. His baby was held and loved on by our pastor’s wife. I remember those days with young children and I am glad we could provide a respite for him.

I don’t tell you this story to boast. I tell you this story to illustrate when you say yes to God, even when you are unsure, He blesses your time and efforts. Our brunch was not the greatest brunch our guests had ever experienced. It didn’t need to be. We had a wonderful time of fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ. We gathered a group of the church, fed them, and provided a place for them to hang out.

Sometimes doing God’s work is having a quiet conversation with a child who is having a rough day. It might mean bringing a neighbor a treat so they know you were thinking of them. Occasionally it means opening up your home to host folks for a meal when you weren’t planning to. When our hearts are open to serving God, He can use us in many wonderful ways.

Deliberate Dolls

What a children’s book and our faith have in common

One evening I was reading to my six-year-old before bedtime. We were reading The Doll People by Ann M Martin & Laura Godwin. This children’s book tells a story of a doll Annabel and her family. They live in a dollhouse but can walk and talk. They only move about when their human owners are asleep or not home.

In the first book of the series, Martin & Godwin informs us how the dolls are created and made “real.” The dolls decide if they want to be a regular doll (giving up human abilities) or a doll person (can walk and talk). If they choose a doll person, they must take an oath.

Annabel is informed right before taking her oath that being a doll person is harder, it comes with great responsibility. It also comes with fun and adventure.

This reminds me of our faith journey. The Christian life is not easy. Although we don’t take an actual oath, we do commit our lives to Christ. We promise to live for Him instead of ourselves. This is no easy task.

In the book, if humans catch the dolls moving, they are thrust into doll state where they can’t move or talk for 24 hours. There are also rumors of a permanent doll state for serious offenses.

As Christians, when we mess up, thankfully we aren’t thrust into a paralyzed state like Annabel. Instead, we repent of our sins to our loving Father in Heaven. He doesn’t reprehend us, but rather washes our sins away. He doesn’t chastise us and shake His finger in our face. He accepts our burdens and mess. He cleans us off, and helps us get back up again. What an incredible Father we have!

Just as Annabel forgets, or chooses to ignore her oath on occasion, we sometimes forget who we are living for. Or we choose to go our own way knowing it’s not God’s plan.

Being a Christian comes with responsibility and risk. It also comes with a great reward.

Keenly Knocking

Little girl shown in picture not actually Charlotte

My joy-filled six-year-old daughter Charlotte awoke one Saturday morning excited about her first horse lesson. She walked down the hall and knocked on Madelyn’s door (her older sister) asking what she should wear to her lesson.

Charlotte’s enthusiasm was not matched by her older sister who did not appreciate being woken up at 6:00 am on a Saturday. Madelyn rolled over and tried unsuccessfully to return to sleep.

This reminds me of our faith journey. Jesus will come and knock at your door. He won’t force His way in, although He could.

He comes offering a better way, help, and peace. Most of us roll over and ignore Him thinking we’ve got this on our own, we don’t need help.

For those of us who rise, open the door, and invite Him in…. oh, the wonders that await you. You can ask for wisdom or knowledge or anything your heart desires. (Psalm 37:4)

If you open that door, put your seatbelt on because you are about to embark on an unbelievable journey. You are not guaranteed an easy path, but He promises never to leave you alone. (“God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9)

God will always be there to offer assistance, wisdom, discernment, courage, comfort, and more. Even when you turn your back on Him, He’s still there, patiently waiting.

My daughter’s enthusiasm for her horse lesson does not compare to God’s enthusiasm for you. He desires you to know Him. He has blessings to pour upon you, peace to give you, and an unforgettable ride to take you on.

Don’t roll over anymore at His knocking. Get up and open the door!
